New Zealand Schools need to have a School Management System to manage students, teachers, schedules, grades, attendence and many other aspects of school operations. There are various commercial options available, however these options are tied to a commercial platform, are somewhat dated, and have ongoing license costs.

The requirements for a New Zealand School Management System are somewhat in alignment with other countries. However, the New Zealand environment does in fact introduce specific requirements, especially around data transfer and sharing with the Ministry of Education.

This purpose of this project isn't nessasarily starting a new software system, but will attempt to make use of and contribute to existing open source software projects in order to create a system suitable for the New Zealand environment. It is a central point of coordination for those interested in delivering such a system to New Zealand schools.
